Jewish Soldiers in the Civil War: The Union Army

National Archives Museum
Online

What was it like to be Jewish in Lincoln’s armies? The Union army was as diverse as the embattled nation it sought to preserve, comprising a unique mixture of ethnicities, religions, and identities. Almost one Union soldier in four was born abroad, and natives and newcomers fought side by side, sometimes uneasily. Yet though scholars have parsed the trials and triumphs of Irish, Germans, African Americans, and others in the Union ranks, they have remained largely silent on the everyday experiences of the largest non-Christian minority to have served. Adam D. Mendelsohn draws for the first time upon the vast database of verified listings of Jewish soldiers serving in the Civil War as well as letters, diaries, and newspapers to examine the collective experience of Jewish soldiers and to recover their voices and stories. Joining the author in discussion will be Jenna Weissman Joselit, the Charles E. Smith Professor of Judaic Studies and Professor of History at the George Washington University, and Adrienne DeArmas, who wrote the foreword and will do a presentation on the Shapell Roster for Jewish Service in the American Civil War.

This program is made possible in part by the National Archives Foundation.

Mona Freedman Morris: Treasures from Historical NY Vital Records

January 15, 2023 @ 11:00 am

THE JEWISH GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY OF GREATER MIAMI at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation:

4200 Biscayne Blvd. Miami, Florida 33137

Many of our ancestors arrived through the Port of New York and spent time there before venturing on to other locations. In this talk, Mona will show us the new website now available for researching the NYC Vital Records. She will show how and why these records are so important to all genealogists and how to utilize them efficiently. As in previous lectures, Mona will include stories so that we see how these records can impact your research and why they are such a treasure.

From JewishGen

Visit us at JewishGen.org

We are pleased to present the JewishGen High Holiday Companion 2022/5783, which contains inspirational vignettes about how Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur were observed in various communities. This year's collection includes towns in Poland, Ukraine and Belarus, and includes the account of Holocaust Survivors observing Rosh Hashana in their hometown after the war - a town which did not have even one standing synagogue for them to pray in.

Particularly during this troubling time throughout the world, we hope that this companion will inspire you to connect with previous generations, and to help preserve and perpetuate the values which they held most dear.

There are two ways to read the High Holiday Companion:
(1) Click here to download as a PDF
(2) Click here to read it online.

I hope you will enjoy reading these articles. If you have any feedback, or would like to help sponsor a future addition, please contact me at your convenience.

Shana Tova, Happy New Year, and THANK YOU for being part of the JewishGen family. We are looking forward to a GREAT year ahead.

Avraham Groll
